Matt, Summer Intern (Wholesale Credit Risk)
The opportunities and resources provided to me have far exceeded my Internship expectations at Barclays.

Two rotations down, I am now looking forward to a move to the bright lights of the city and our Canary Wharf offices in October for a six month stint. I shall be joining our Wealth Advisory team, within Barclays Wealth and Investment Management, which helps private clients, whatever their goals might be, to protect and grow their wealth, so that they may not only enjoy it, but also pass it on to the next generation.
My first brush with Barclays came at the Barclays Spring Week programme which gives first-year university students an early insight into a career in the financial world.
I remember a few things clearly from my week in London; the neon lights of the dodgem arcade at NAMCO Southbank where we met other graduates and a fast-paced trading game during which I had my first real brush with the financial markets. However what really stands out is the sunny Thursday afternoon when Wealth and Investment Management presented to the room; for me, everything clicked into place. Those three short hours made me realise that this was where I wanted to start my career.
As soon as I could, I applied to the Wealth and Investment Management summer internship programme which led me to Canary Wharf on a grey December day for an interview on the 30th floor of our offices. Here I met Terry, who would eventually hire me onto his team.
My interview with him was far from the formal experience that I had expected. As well as some of the usual questions, we discussed our mutual love of scuba diving and my interest in the charity sector. Little did I know at the time that Terry ran the Charities team! Six months later, I moved to a beautiful flat in Westferry (our balcony had stunning views of the Canary Wharf skyline!) to begin my 10 week stint with his team.
From presentations on the 31st floor of the Barclays Building, to a trip on the London Eye, the 10 weeks flew by, culminating in me receiving a job offer for the Graduate Programme, which I was thrilled about.
One year after starting, I still have the same enthusiasm that I had a year ago (but perhaps now with a little more direction!).
I’m looking forward to sharing more of what I am getting up to with you over the coming months. In the meantime, I am heading off on holiday this weekend to visit one of my fellow Barclays graduates, Katie, who is currently on international rotation in Singapore!
