Internal Audit is an independent and influential control function that’s critical to our business right around the world. You’ll be joining a global team that’s trusted by the bank at the highest levels – doing work that helps change our business for the better. We’re open to non-degree qualified candidates in their last year of school or college who have the required UCAS points. If you don’t have the required UCAS points, don’t worry; you can still apply if you have a years work experience. If you have neither you may want to explore our Foundation programme. Internal candidates who meet our criteria are also encouraged to apply. If you already have a degree-level qualification, we recommend you look at our graduate opportunities instead.

Sam's view

Learn more about Sam's experience as an Internal Audit Higher Apprentice and discover if it could be the right path for you?

When it comes to the skills and lessons I’ve learned, there are literally too many to name. I learn several new things every day, and that’s been ever since I’ve joined the bank.

To be completely honest, I never thought my application would go anywhere. Why would a bank hire me? I didn’t think I’d get a call back, let alone get the job. After all, my experience of audit in the past was very limited. I did do a little bit of it in the Navy, but nothing like what I’m working on now.

My role initially was to assist on Audits, but I was quickly given my own responsibilities, and now my day to day is the same as any other auditor in the office. At the same time, I also organise training, deliver presentations, and meet with stakeholders – as well as managing my studies. It’s a big challenge, but I’ve had a lot of support, and I know now that I want to stay in this department for as long as they’ll have me – even after my Higher Apprenticeship ends.

I think once you start, you can achieve whatever you set your mind to, really. For me, a highlight was the One Young World Summit. Barclays selected me as one of their twelve delegates, and I went all the way to Ottawa to hear from world leaders and to meet young people from all over the globe. It was my first trip away, and it set the bar pretty high for what I’ll achieve in the future.

What to expect

Expect to spend three years learning how to improve the processes and controls that make us a better business. You’ll experience a wide range of teams and areas through a series of work placements. These will include important areas such as governance, risk management and control. As you progress, you’ll build up skills and knowledge that will not only help you take the next step in Internal Audit, but will also open up opportunities in other areas.

How you’ll develop

Our rotation scheme will make sure that the experience you gain is as broad and useful as possible. Your managers, colleagues and dedicated buddy will do the same. At the same time as building your experience, you’ll also study for industry-recognised Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) qualifications.

Who thrives here?

Anyone who’s got the right attitude. You’ll be an analytical thinker, who knows how to work with people as well as numbers – but you don’t need to have a lot of experience, as long as you’ve got the potential. A readiness to learn and an eagerness to take on new challenges will also prove useful.

How can you prepare?

Our interviews aren’t about trying to trip you up. The fact is, we want everyone to do well. The more diverse talent we can enable, the better. That’s why we’ve put together an in-depth guide to our Higher Apprenticeship application process – so that you can prepare and get ready to succeed with us.
