Army to Apprentice: how I brought a different way of thinking to leadership

My summer internship in Global Markets - Trading at Barclays was kickstarted with two days of induction, conducted by the HR team and financial training specialists. From the start, it was made clear to us that we would be held to very high standards but that we would get all the support we’d need in order to achieve our full potential. That was quickly proven when I met the team on my Delta One trading desk.
After familiarising myself with the specifics of the job I was launched right into the heart of the action. By making use of the vast resources put together by Barclays researchers I was asked to perform stock analysis in order to come up with actual dividend trade ideas. Luckily, my desk is very tight knit and everybody from the analysts to the MD is more than happy to answer questions.
My email was filled with invites to networking events and guest talks for the benefit of the interns, like the Women’s Initiative Network (WiN) which distinguishes itself by going the extra mile in supporting female interns. I was particularly excited about the Barclays Interns Citizenship challenge and the opportunity it offers to solve a real life issue by advising local charities.
In my opinion Barclays has achieved exactly what I was looking for in an employer.
