Empowering women

We’re passionate about giving women across the globe more opportunities to fulfil their career aspirations. And we’re fully committed to increasing female representation in senior leadership roles. Here are a few ways we’re doing it.

HeForShe campaign

We’re enthusiastic participants in the United Nation’s HeForShe campaign, which encourages men to take action against the inequalities faced by women. So far, over 11,000 Barclays’ current and alumni employees have pledged to take part in this crucial initiative.

As a leader, as a husband, and as a father I believe that enabling true gender equality is a responsibility we all share. At Barclays, we take that responsibility seriously.

Supporting future leaders

Research shows that leadership teams with greater gender diversity develop better solutions and foster a more collaborative environment. To make sure women in our business have the greatest opportunity to become leaders, we run and support a range of programmes. These include International Women’s Day, the Global Women in Leadership Forum, as well as sponsorship and mentoring initiatives.

Win: the gender network

The Women’s Initiative Network (Win) helps Barclays attract, retain and maximise the talent of women. This network makes full use of the bank’s partnerships with the United Nations HeForShe campaign, Everywoman and Catalyst. It currently boasts more than 12,000 members worldwide.

HM Treasury Women in Finance Charter

In July 2016, Barclays was proud to become one of the first signatories to the HM Treasury Women in Finance Charter.

The firms that have signed up to the charter employ over half a million people and span across the breadth of the financial services sector. Each has pledged to improve gender diversity in their companies and include specialist industries such as FinTech, as well HM Treasury, the Financial Conduct Authority and financial services trade bodies.

Gender pay gap reporting brings further focus to Barclays’ long-standing commitment to improving gender diversity. You can read about our efforts here

Barclays Women in Leadership Conference

Programmes such as International Women's Day, the Barclays Global Women in Leadership Conference, sponsorship and mentoring initiatives, enable us to support the considerable achievements of the talented women across our business.

I am inspired everyday by everyone at Barclays who enables positive change and inspires action on gender diversity. This is reflected in the external recognition we have recently received. For the third consecutive year, Barclays was one of over 100 global organisations included in the Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index, reflecting best-in-class statistics and policies. We were also recently named on The Times Top 50 Employers for Women for the eighth consecutive year.
