A Structuring Team has a large remit and a Graduate can expect to experience and gain knowledge about many aspects of the business. A Graduate in a Structuring department will have you interacting closely with Sales, Trading, Legal, Compliance and, eventually, Clients and so will give you a very broad experience of the different roles within the bank. As the team has such a large remit, you can expect that you’ll find whatever skills you have extremely useful in this business area, ranging from Technical Skills allowing you to help out with Pricing and Product Analysis, or Marketing and Sales Skills helping out with the Origination team.
What to expect
As a Graduate in a Structuring department, you will interact closely with Sales,
Trading, Legal, Compliance and, eventually, Clients and so will give you a very
broad experience of the different roles within the bank. As the team has such a
large remit, you can expect that you’ll find whatever skills you have extremely
useful in this business area, ranging from Technical Skills allowing you to
help out with Pricing and Product Analysis, or Marketing and Sales Skills
helping out with the Origination team. As the output of a Structuring team is so large, you can expect to
be matched to a product area that most suits your skillset. This may be one or more, of
Pricing, Index Development, Product Analysis or Origination.
How you'll develop
As you start out on your career in Structuring, you can expect to gain a good
base knowledge in your chosen product area through close monitoring and supervision. As you gain experience, you
can expect to be given much more autonomy in your work, and start visiting clients. As you start to get to grips
with your first area of expertise, you can expect to have your skills broadened as you begin to
take on projects and tasks outside of their original remit.
Who thrives here
As this structuring role is
both client facing and involved with product development, you will need to have
a good balance between technical and people skills. No prior experience in
business or the financial markets is necessary, but a thirst to learn and an
interest in both is essential for success in this role. You should be organised
and eager to develop and progress to do well here.
