Welcome from Jes Staley
Jes Staley, our Group Chief Executive, has recorded a personal message for you, sharing his thoughts on who we’re looking for and why you should consider starting your career at Barclays. See if what he describes sounds like the place you want to be.
A values-driven business
Barclays operates in over 40 countries, but our competitive advantage doesn’t just stem from our ability to move, lend, invest and protect money worldwide. It’s also down to the quality and character of our people. We all live and breathe a set of values – respect, integrity, service, excellence and stewardship – which guide our every move. Show us you can bring them to life too, and you’ll go far.
327 years of innovation
Founded in 1690, we’re older than the Bank of England, the United States and the United Kingdom. Yet we’ve always been ahead of the times. From pioneering international trade finance and large-scale branch banking to launching the world’s first cash machine and mobile cheque deposit technology, we’ve set the pace in the financial services industry. And we have no intention of slowing down now. Ideas are our true currency – and we need your help to advance them.
Life at Barclays
We recognise how important our people are to our continued success and want you to bring your best to work every day. That’s why we’re committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment. Check out a few of the ways we help you get as much out as you put in.
Work’s important. But so is every other part of
your life. That’s why we empower you to balance your professional and personal
lives in a way that works for you – and which can flex as your circumstances
change. Our flexible working arrangements, as well as opportunities to take a
career break, will help you achieve all sorts of ambitions.
Like our customers, our people reflect the world. It’s this diversity that fires so many of our ideas and keeps us at the top of our game. We’re proud to say we’ve won awards for our work in this area. And prouder still of the reasons why. For instance, women make up half of Barclays’ global workforce. We’re enthusiastic participants in the HeForShe campaign, which encourages men to take action against the inequalities faced by women. And, for the last four years, we have been a headline sponsor of London Pride.
A host of different employee network groups reinforce our commitment to diversity. Linked to everything from gender, multiculturalism, sexuality and age to families, parenting and military service, they give our employees rock-solid support. There’s even one for people just starting out in their careers. Called Emerge, it organises events and experiences that will help you build strong, cross-generational relationships, develop your internal network, share knowledge and gain invaluable skills.
Being comfortable, confident and open at work about who you are helps set you up for success. If you need us to make adjustments for a disability or health condition, let us know at any point. We’re here to support you so your ability can flourish.
Making a positive contribution
We focus on activities and initiatives that are good for Barclays and for society. We call this focus our Shared Growth Ambition. By helping people develop the vital skills they need to get into work, by making it easier to access financial services and by funding solutions to global challenges, we have a positive effect on society. Plus we use our time, money and skills to support the communities we work in. Through our volunteering, fundraising and giving programmes, our employees have helped millions of young people across the world. You too can make a contribution that counts.
